"Avery

Avery McCurdy

When we speak of the Ladies of the Lake, we have to include my granddaughter, Avery. No, she doesn’t cook anything, or send us treats, or spruce up the cabin. She doesn’t provide a cake or make sure we have a boat…wait, why is she a Lady of the Lake? Oh, that’s right, because she is the first and only female to ever spend a Webster event with us. No. Small. Thing.

While she was visiting us here in South Carolina in the summer of 2016, she talked about her time at Webster. She said she didn’t remember a whole lot, because she was young, but the one overpowering memory that she had was how awesome her Grandpa (me) was. She said she had no idea about my general wonderfulness until she got to spend some quality time at the lake with me and that the experience made a lasting impression that she will always cherish for the rest of her life.

"I'm

What??? How did this get here?

Ok, I made up some of that. Actually, almost all of it. All of it. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that Avery has the distinction of being the only non-male to spend the weekend at Webster with the guys. She was too young to play cards or McCurdy Wiffle Ball, but she could fish with the best of us. It was wonderful to have her with us there and I’ll never forget her parting words to me on that Sunday morning, when we were all packing up and preparing our separate ways home. She turned her pretty little face to me, her eyes brimming with tears, and said, “Goodbye Grandpa, you’re my absolute favorite grandfather of all times.”

I’m sorry, I did it again. She didn’t say that at all and I apologize to any of her other grandfathers that I may have offended. But in her tiny little heart, I could sense that nobody in her life would ever be as fantastic as…you know what? Never mind. But she is my special Lady of the Lake.
