Build The Field

In McCurdy Wiffle Ball, you don’t choose a field as much as you define it- the game can be played just about anywhere. The first thing you want to do is find a relatively clear area. Usually, we find where we want home plate to be and then just start hitting the ball until we find a spot that we can reach occasionally but not every time. That line has been getting closer as we get older but it’s usually 75-100 feet away. You really need some physical evidence of a home run line. We have occasionally used an extension cord, but you need something.

Then we will agree on what exactly constitutes foul and fair territory. This may take a few minutes but trust me, it’s worth the effort. The pitcher’s mound is where the ball can be thrown accurately and comfortably from. Remember, there are no called strikes or balls, so there is no real value in making the mound so far away or so close that the batter does not get a chance to get some good swings.

In all cases, if the field is actually on the property of someone else (neighbor) it is customary to address them as either Old Man or Old Lady. For example, we are currently using our neighbor’s yard. Dorothy is young and ravishing, but during the game, she is always referred to as Old Lady Dorothy. Does she like it? No, but you can’t fight tradition.
